Cadaqués is a beautiful white Mediterranean fishing village in Cap de Creus National Park. Originally it was a small walled village on a hill overlooked by the church of Sanat Maria. Parts of the wall are still to be seen. The restaurant Can Tito on c/ Vigilant is a great example with its murder hole over the door as you walk in. Cadaqués was kept under the control of the count of Empúries, unlike its close neighbour Llança which came under the domain of the church. This meant it had a high degree of autonomy and independence and became one of the most important towns in the region. |

Cadaqués has always been a rugged and rocky place, only accessable by foot or boat from the rest of Catalunya. In the early 20th century a large number of inhabitants of Cadaqués travelled or emigrated to Cuba (the figure has been estimated as one third of a village of approximately 1200 people). Many of these immigrants were financially successful in Cuba and returned to Cadaqués where they built large and ornate houses. A file example is Casa Blau on the seafront.
Cadaqués became a favourite haunt of artists like Duchamp, Dalí and Pixtot. There is a whole industry built up around Dalí in Cadaques, Port Ligat (where he lived) and Figueres (his birthplace), the capital of the district of Alt Empordà. The wonderful thing about Cadaqués, is that the local council has been very strict with the local development, e.g. no building can go above three stories and development in the "old town" must be very sympathetic with the traditional style and character. As a result the town retains its charm, even in the busy summer months. |

The town´s centre-piece is the church of Santa Maria- built between the 17th and 19th centuries. A feature of this beautiful church is the magnificent, elaborate Byzantine alterpiece with its statue of a pregnamt Madonna. The altar is worth viewing even from the main door at the cost of a few euro for illumination.
